How NOT to be a DJ at K-IRB.com

November 28th, 2006

I can’t talk for other stations, and to be honest there are other stations that’ll hire anyone - K-IRB.com isn’t one of them.

When looking for new people to be a part of the station, I like to know that whomever is applying to be here is coherent, willing to work with us, and able to follow simple directions. One of my biggest peeves is when I ask someone two or three simple questions and they decide to say something totally different than from what I asked for. It’s like a test, to see if you’re paying attention or whether you are actually interested in this. Plus, I get to know the kind of person you are at the same time, and whether you’re the perfect fit for the station or now.

The new K-IRB.com application is simple. We don’t ask a lot of questions, but the one I did ask is “Why would you make a great K-IRB.com DJ?”

Here is an actual application response to that question:

im a comic, who needs a show, some of your dj’s has played some of my comedy, I wan’t to perform inprov live on the radio with everyone.

My response was: “I need an idea of what kind of show you would do, what kind of music you would play, and an idea of how you would promote the show to get listeners. Please reply with this and a 30-song playlist.”

Basically - as far as what kind of show he would do - I wanted to know if he was just going to do three hours of stand-up on the internet, music, jokes, interviews, or whatever. The music he’d play and how he’d promote the show… well, that’s basics.

This is what I got in return:

well I already have about 70,000 fans to bring to the list I can'’t generate a play list but heres artists you would hear

He supplied a list of artists he would play, which I’m willing to go with as far as a playlist goes, but he didn’t answer the “what kind of show you would do” or “how you would promote the show” questions. Instead, he swung out a large number of people he would potentially bring to the table.

To which I replied:

I just want to make sure I got this right: All I got was a sample playlist and that you have a lot of fans, but that doesn’t show me a game plan as to HOW you plan on getting listeners to the show.

If I recall right, the reason why I didn’t give you a show last time was because you couldn’t understand simple instructions and that you couldn’t give me a direct link to your website, despite several requests. All I want is what kind of show you’d do and an actual plan as to how you would promote your show? Your MySpace friends list has about 7,500 people on it, so where are the other 62,500 people coming from?

I really don’t have the time to go back and forth and back and forth asking the same questions. Unfortunately, you are once again denied.

That’s right, once again. The first time was a couple of months ago - he sent me a link to his MySpace, but the link didn’t work. I asked him for the right link, he replied saying that it’s spelled wrong on purpose. So I never wrote him back. If I can’t see what you’re doing, why would I want to bring you aboard?

Let’s recap

If you want to be a DJ at K-IRB.com, answer any questions that’s asked. You don’t have to be a genius or a Rhodes scholar. I just want to know if you can handle the absolute basics.

That’s not too hard to ask for, is it?

My Audience Sucks

July 18th, 2006

One of the things I try to remind new DJs is that they should bring their own audience. Meaning, you go out and MySpace it or forum whore it or whatever you have to do to get the word out that you’re doing a radio show. Feel free to save and download the button icon we made for your show and put that in all your signatures on every forum you’re at.

Honestly, you want the most listeners for your show as possible, and we don’t do that for you. You do.

As much as k-IRB is supported by our listeners, they aren’t coming here for an automated program playing music all day and night; they are here for you, the live DJs.

So tell them when you are on the air. Invite them to go to your forum page at the k-IRB.com forum. Give out buttons and tell them to spread the word for you.

It sounds lame, but it’s true. And it will work for you if you are willing to take the time out and tell everyone the deal.

Welcome to K-IRB’s DJ Lounge

July 8th, 2006

If you haven’t noticed the new layout for K-IRB.com, then you’re fucking blind - or you need to refresh your browser. By the way, catch up to 2006, while you’re at it.

Anyway, this thread is to let me be able to keep in touch with you guys while at the same let you be able to do whatever the Hell it is you guys do to keep in touch with each other and whatnot. Think of it like a “work bulletin board” except this isn’t work, and we have no push-pins.

I finally got to fixing the “log in” page. Just click on the link on “How to log in” to the right hand side, and there it is… everything you need to kick the feed, log on, and so on.

JOIN THE FORUMS!!! Every live DJ will get their own forum to moderate, so this will be a great way for everyone to get involved and help promote the damn thing. Once I figure it all out, I’ll probably have some kind of added linkage on there, so people can listen and such, and whatever.

Eventually, I want to have “official” K-IRB.com DJ pages, so if you don’t have a bio, email it to me (along with a moderately recent picture of yourself) at john@thedeadend.net and I’ll make the updates.

It’s a work in progress… and if you have ANY ideas, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks a lot, and I’m sorry for the loooong ass delay in putting this up (it was supposed to launch in February). I hope it was worth the wait.

John
